G-Spyke — Privacy Policy
Last updated: July 3, 2026
G-Spyke ("the app") is a field application for geologists to log stratigraphic columns, developed by Serpentinite Labs ("we", "us"). This Privacy Policy describes what information the app handles and how, and applies to G-Spyke on all platforms, including Android and iOS, however you downloaded it. In short: your geological data belongs to you and stays on your device.
1. Your geological data stays on your device
Everything you create — projects, columns, layers, measurements, GPS coordinates of your field sites, photos, samples and notes — is stored locally on your device. We do not upload it to any server and we cannot see it.
Backups (".gspyke" files) are generated on your device and are encrypted; they are only shared if you choose to share or export them.
2. Permissions
The app requests the following permissions, used exclusively to provide its functionality:
- Location (GPS / Location Services): to tag your field sites with their coordinates. Stored locally.
- Camera and photo library: to take or attach photos to your layers. Stored locally.
- Files and storage: to save and restore backups and exports on your device.
3. Diagnostics and analytics (Google Firebase)
To keep the app stable and improve it, we use Google Firebase Crashlytics and Google Analytics for Firebase. When your device is online, these services may collect:
- Crash reports and diagnostics (device model, operating system and app version, crash details).
- Usage events.
- A device/app identifier.
- Approximate location (country/region, derived from your IP address).
This data is processed by Google as our service provider, is not linked to your name, is not sold or shared with other companies, and is transmitted encrypted. When you are offline, the app works normally and none of this data is sent.
We do not use advertising identifiers (such as Apple's IDFA or the Android Advertising ID) and we do not track you across other apps or websites.

4. Accounts
The app has no account or sign-in. We do not collect your name, email address or phone number through the app.
5. Sharing initiated by you
If you choose to export or share a column, photo, backup or project (for example via email or a messaging app), that sharing happens through the app you select and is governed by that app's own privacy policy. G-Spyke itself does not send your geological data anywhere automatically.
6. Data retention and deletion
Your geological data lives only on your device: you can delete individual projects from within the app, or remove everything by clearing the app's storage or uninstalling G-Spyke. We have no copy of that data and cannot recover it after deletion.
Diagnostics and analytics data are retained according to Firebase's standard retention periods. To request deletion of this data, write to research@serpentinitelabs.com.
7. Children's privacy
G-Spyke is a professional tool and is not directed at children under 13.
8. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time, for example if a future version of the app adds new features. Any changes will be published on this page with an updated date.
